Editorial Policies (English)

This page is the English translation of the editorial policies of Revista Diálogos: Direito, Economia, Políticas Públicas e Sociedade (Diálogos Journal: Law, Economics, Public Policy and Society), published in Portuguese on the page Políticas Editoriais. In case of divergence, the Portuguese text prevails. All policies are effective from 12 September 2026. The peer review policy was last updated on 19 October 2026 (editorial workflow deadlines).

1. PEER REVIEW POLICY AND EDITORIAL WORKFLOW

Mode. Revista Diálogos adopts double-blind review: reviewers do not know the identity of the authors, and authors do not know the identity of the reviewers.

Stages. (1) Preliminary assessment, within three days, in which the Editor-in-Chief verifies scope, originality, compliance with the guidelines and anonymization, and may reject the manuscript outright. (2) Similarity check, within one day. (3) Submission to two reviewers holding a doctoral degree and working in the specific area of the manuscript. (4) Editorial decision, within two days of the reports. (5) Round of revisions, when applicable. (6) Final check, copyediting and publication, within seven days of the revisions.

Deadlines. Reviewers have up to one week to accept the invitation and up to four weeks to submit their report. If the two reports diverge, a third reviewer is appointed. Authors have up to fifteen days to address revision requests.

Criteria. Fit with the journal's scope; originality and relevance of the contribution; clarity of the research problem and of the thesis advanced; methodological consistency; adequacy, currency and diversity of sources; rigor in the analysis of legislation and case law, where applicable; quality of writing and compliance with the guidelines.

Possible decisions. Approval; approval with minor revisions; revision with new review; rejection. The final decision rests with the Editor-in-Chief, after consulting the Editorial Board and the reviewers.

Impediments. The following may not review a manuscript: reviewers affiliated with the same institution as any of the authors, those who have co-authored with them in the last three years, those who hold or have held a supervisory relationship with them, and those with whom a conflict of interest has been declared.

Transparency. The journal publishes annually the number of submissions received, the rejection rate, the average time between submission and first decision and between submission and publication, as well as an acknowledgment list of the period's reviewers, without linking reviewers to manuscripts.

2. ETHICS AND EDITORIAL INTEGRITY POLICY

The Journal is guided by the principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and adopts the duties below.

Editors. Decide exclusively on academic merit, without discrimination of any kind; preserve the confidentiality of manuscripts and identities; refrain from acting in cases in which they have a conflict of interest; investigate allegations of misconduct and take the appropriate measures.

Reviewers. Keep the content of the manuscript confidential; decline the invitation when they lack expertise in the subject, availability or impartiality; produce reasoned and respectful reports; report to the editor any sign of plagiarism, duplicate publication or misuse of data.

Authors. Ensure the originality of the work; credit authorship only to those who effectively contributed, with honorary authorship and the omission of authors prohibited; cite sources correctly; report errors identified after publication; not submit the same work to more than one journal simultaneously.

Complaints. Allegations of misconduct may be sent to revistadialogos.saolucas@afya.com.br, identifying the complainant and providing supporting elements. The accused will be notified and has fifteen days to respond. If misconduct is established, the Journal will adopt the appropriate measures, which may include correction, retraction and notification of the institutions involved.

3. SIMILARITY AND PLAGIARISM POLICY

All manuscripts undergo a similarity check before being sent to reviewers, using the CopySpider tool applied to the anonymized version of the manuscript. Similarity rates above 25%, excluding properly referenced quotations, the bibliography and transcribed normative texts, call for individual analysis by the Editor-in-Chief. If plagiarism, undeclared self-plagiarism, or fabrication or falsification of data is found, the manuscript is rejected. If it is found after publication, the retraction policy applies. Given the nature of legal research, the transcription of normative texts, case summaries and excerpts of court decisions is not counted as undue similarity, provided it is properly identified and referenced.

4. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE POLICY

Authors. Artificial intelligence systems cannot be listed as authors, as they cannot answer for the content. The use of generative AI tools at any stage of the research or writing must be declared at submission, indicating the tool, the version and the purpose. It is prohibited to present as research results content entirely generated by AI, as well as to include references not verified by the author.

Reviewers. It is prohibited to submit manuscripts, in whole or in part, to third-party AI systems, as this breaches confidentiality. The report is a personal act of the reviewer.

Editors. Support tools may be used in instrumental tasks, such as checking compliance with formatting standards and preliminary screening, without delegating the editorial decision to an automated system.

Responsibility. The declaration of use does not exempt authors from full responsibility for the published content, including any errors, inaccuracies or nonexistent references introduced by automated tools.

5. CONFLICT OF INTEREST POLICY

A conflict of interest is any circumstance capable of unduly influencing the conduct of the research, the review or the editorial decision, whether financial, institutional, professional or personal.

Authors must declare at submission the existence or absence of conflicts of interest and the funding sources of the research. The declaration is published with the article.

Reviewers must decline invitations in which a conflict of interest exists, observing the impediments of the peer review policy.

Members of the editorial board who submit manuscripts to the Journal are fully removed from the respective editorial process, which is conducted by another editor, with no access by the author to the system regarding that manuscript.

6. ERRATA, CORRECTION AND RETRACTION POLICY

Errata. Errors that do not compromise the results or the interpretation of the work are corrected by erratum, published as a separate document, with a persistent identifier and a reciprocal link to the original article, which remains available.

Correction. Relevant errors that affect part of the results lead to the publication of a correction, with a precise description of what was changed and why.

Retraction. When plagiarism, fabrication or falsification of data, duplicate publication, improper authorship or an error that invalidates the conclusions is established, the article is retracted. The retraction is published as a separate document, the original article remains accessible with a watermark indicating the retraction, and the reason is stated objectively.

Initiative and deadline. Errata, corrections and retractions may be proposed by authors, readers or the editorial board. Once a proposal is received, the authors are notified and have fifteen days to respond. The decision rests with the Editor-in-Chief, after consulting the Editorial Board.

Published articles are not removed from the portal, except by court order or proven risk to third parties.

7. OPEN ACCESS AND FEES POLICY

Revista Diálogos adopts immediate and full open access, with no embargo period. All published content is freely available under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license (CC BY 4.0).

The Journal charges no submission fees, article processing charges (APC), review fees, editing fees or publication fees, at any stage and for any section.

Maintenance costs are fully borne by Centro Universitário São Lucas - Afya.

8. DIGITAL PRESERVATION POLICY

The content published by Revista Diálogos is preserved through the PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN), a distributed digital preservation network maintained by the Public Knowledge Project, which ensures continued access should the portal be discontinued. In addition, files and metadata are covered by a backup routine maintained by the Technology Development Center (Núcleo de Desenvolvimento Tecnológico) of Centro Universitário São Lucas - Afya, and the metadata are exposed through the OAI-PMH protocol, allowing harvesting by repositories and aggregators.

9. PREPRINTS AND SELF-ARCHIVING POLICY

The Journal accepts manuscripts previously deposited in preprint servers, provided that the deposit is reported at submission, with the address and identifier. Prior deposit does not constitute prior publication. Authors are authorized to deposit the submitted version, the accepted version and the published version in institutional and thematic repositories and on personal websites, at any time, indicating the full reference and the address of the publication in this Journal.

10. RESEARCH DATA POLICY

The Journal encourages, without requiring, the sharing of the data underlying published results in an open-access repository with a persistent identifier. For articles submitted to the section Empirical Legal Research (Pesquisa empírica em Direito), authors must include a data availability statement, indicating where the data can be accessed or, with justification, why they cannot be made available. Databases of court decisions, coding spreadsheets, interview scripts and research protocols may be submitted as supplementary documents and are published with the article, subject to personal data protection and any procedural secrecy restrictions.
